The chairman of the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) has remarked that the current surplus in power generation capacity has transformed into a burden rather than an asset. With captive generation included, the nation's installed capacity stands at approximately 34,000 MW. He noted that this figure is nearly 100% higher than the peak demand, whereas the country's requirements could have been adequately met with only a 20% reserve capacity.
