Amid reports of reduced hilsa production within Bangladesh this year, local traders have turned to India to address the domestic supply shortage. According to TBS Bangladesh, this has resulted in the first-ever export of approximately 500 tonnes of hilsa from India to Bangladesh.

Due to a decline in domestic hilsa production, Bangladesh has imported approximately 500 tonnes of the fish from India for the first time.
