Approximately 45 million people hold micro-savings in various microfinance institutions, including BRAC, ASA, and Bureau Bangladesh. Previously, the six percent interest earned on these savings was exempt from taxation. Under the new government directive, a 10 percent source tax will now be applied to this interest income.
