India moves toward reinstating merchant fees on digital payments

India is paving the way for the return of merchant fees on its UPI digital payment network following significant transaction volumes.

The Unified Payments Interface (UPI), recognized as one of the world's most extensive real-time payment networks, recorded 23.6 billion transactions during the month of July. These transactions amounted to a total value of 29.9 trillion rupees, equivalent to approximately $313.5 billion. Amidst this high volume of activity, India is now preparing for the potential reintroduction of merchant fees on digital payments.
