Prabarana Purnima is currently being observed. According to traditional legend, Buddha once cut strands of hair from his head and declared that if he were truly qualified to attain supreme wisdom and enlightenment, the hair would ascend rather than fall. It is believed that the hair subsequently rose into the air.
